American Sociological Association Code of Ethics

The ASA Code of Ethics includes these principles:

  1. Providing proper training and supervision to our students, supervisees, or employees and taking reasonable steps to see that everyone performs their work responsibly, competently, and ethically.
  2. Delegating to our students, supervisees, or employees only those responsibilities that they can reasonably be expected to perform either independently or with the level of supervision provided, based on their education, training, or experience.
  3. Not discriminating based on age; gender; gender identity; race; ethnicity; national origin; religion; sexual orientation; disability; first-generation status; citizenship status; health condition; marital, domestic, or parental status; or any other applicable basis proscribed by law.
  4. Not exploiting in any way persons over whom we have direct or indirect supervisory, evaluative, or other authority such as students, supervisees, employees, or research participants.
  5. Not directly supervising or exercising evaluative authority over any person with whom we have or have had a romantic or sexual relationship, including students, supervisees, employees, or research participants.
  6. Not engaging in harassment of any person, including students, supervisees, employees, colleagues, or research participants.
