Our program is highly structured, with coursework typically taking three years to complete. In addition to coursework, you will receive extensive training in a range of areas and methods. Our students also participate in faculty research projects.

This class provides a comprehensive look at complications that can arise within the context of a survey data collection and analysis (e.g., poor response rates, missing data, errors in variables, panel attrition, panel conditioning, non-representativeness, and complex sample designs).
This course will cover types of qualitative interview study designs, development of interview guides, sampling, probing strategies, transcription conventions, coding strategies, analysis of qualitative data, ways to defend qualitative work in articles, selection and presentation of evidence, and ethical issues in qualitative research.
We will read classic and contemporary work on the social construction of illness and biomedical knowledge, medicalization, treatment-seeking, and health care utilization.
How is social order possible? To answer this question, this course turns our attention to the constitutive role of social interaction. We will focus on social interaction as a crucible in which social structural pressures and individual actions collide to create society.
The Sociological Research Practicum presents entering graduate students with the opportunity to become involved in a large, faculty-directed research project, acquiring research and data collection skills that can be applied in their own work.
The purpose of this graduate seminar is to examine contemporary theoretical and empirical debates in the sociological literature on race and ethnicity in the U.S.
