Janet Enke (Ph.D. 1992) is a professor at Metro State University in St. Paul, Minnesota. At the Spring Faculty Development conference in March 2025, she received a Lifetime Achievement in Teaching Award.
Linda Francis, (Ph.D. 1995) has been appointed Associate Dean in the College of Public Affairs and Education at Cleveland State University. Her appointment began on July 1, 2024.
David Kinney (Ph.D. 1990) writes “I was very fortunate to be mentored by Bill Corsaro, Donna Eder, Shel Stryker and Dave Heise and completed my Ph.D. in 1990. I landed at Central Michigan University in 1995 after a post-doc at the University of Chicago and a position with the U.S. Department of Education in Philadelphia. I founded the Youth Studies Program in 2003 and recruited Katherine Brown Rosier (another IU Sociology Ph.D.) to join me at CMU to help offer the required youth studies courses. Kate and I have been called the mother and father of the Youth Studies Program and I consider Donna and Bill to be the grandmother and grandfather of the program. Interestingly, two other IU graduates, Mari Dagaz and Elbert Almazan, also joined us at CMU and have taught Youth Studies courses. The Capstone Experience is the linchpin of the program and provides Youth Studies students with a service learning/community engagement opportunity to work directly with youth facing adversity. As mentors they make a positive difference in the lives of youth facing serious difficulties.
In turn, our students draw upon their capstone experiences in graduate school and in their careers. Please see the attached photo for additional details. The Youth Studies program is true public sociology and was inspired by my days at IU!”
