The Graduate Student Association (GSA) is the representative of the graduate students in the Sociology department at Indiana University. Through various elected positions and elected and volunteer committees, the GSA communicates with the faculty and staff on issues of importance to graduate students such as faculty hiring and departmental policies. The GSA coordinates activities such as the annual First-Year-Student party and the mentoring program. In addition, the GSA organizes the mentoring award that is presented to a faculty member and to a graduate student each year. All graduate students in the Sociology department are automatically members of the GSA.
In 2010, the GSA received the First Honorable Mention for Civic Engagement from the IU Office for Students Organizations and Activities. This award was presented at the 2010 Student Organization Celebration, which recognizes students’ activities in different domains.
