Recent outside speakers sponsored or co-sponsored by PEC include: Dave Brady (Duke), Tak Wing Chan (Oxford), Lauren Edelman (Berkeley), Jennifer Lena (Vanderbilt), John Levi Martin (Chicago), Robert Sampson (Harvard), Ivan Ermakoff (Wisconsin), Angel Harris (Princeton), Jane Zavisca (Arizona), Florencia Torche (Stanford University), Hae Yeon Choo (University of Toronto), Rob Warren (University of Minnesota), and Terence McDonnell (Notre Dame).
The network of scholars meets weekly during spring semesters to discuss work in progress. The scope of PEC is, by design, deliberately broad and inclusive, ranging from work on inequality in comparative and historical perspective to the study of political processes and national states, and from research on collective identity and mobilization to the fields of cultural sociology. Meetings are organized around one or a pair of presentations by Sociology faculty, graduate students (at all stages of study), and visiting speakers, alongside participants from other IU departments or schools.
An additional feature of PEC is the convening of occasional symposia, focusing on a topic of thematic relevance to the department or workshop. Past symposia have focused on challenges involved in conducting macro-sociological work, the study of social change, empirical democratic theory and a multi-disciplinary study of inequality.
PEC welcomes participation by all sociologists and other interested scholars. For additional information, contact Fabio Rojas (frojas@indiana.edu).
