Rudy Professor of Sociology at Indiana University, has been honored with the 2024 Cooley Mead Award for Lifetime Achievement in Social Psychology. Brian’s career is a testament to versatility and breadth. Starting as a family demographer, he has made significant strides in various areas including gender, education, sexuality, and emotion. Many of his letter writers described his work as “eclectic,” “multi-faceted,” and “everywhere” - as in “that guy is literally everywhere!”.
Notably, Brian has received numerous Lifetime Achievement Awards across different sections, highlighting his extensive influence. His prolific output includes over 100 articles in top journals like ASR, AJS, and SPQ, along with numerous book chapters and award-winning books. His research, often utilizing large-scale public opinion data, addresses pressing social issues such as college payment, marriage rights, and the decline of women’s willingness to identify as feminists.
