Brea Perry named Allen D. and Polly S. Grimshaw Professor

Tuesday, May 3, 2022

Brea L. Perry

Brea Perry has been selected as the next Allen D. and Polly S. Grimshaw Professor.  The Grimshaw Professor is honored with a named professorship and a five year term as recipient of Grimshaw Foundation funds in recognition of contributions to the Department of Sociology, Indiana University, and Sociology as a discipline.  In establishing the fund for the Professorship (and the accompanying annual Grimshaw Lecture), former Sociology Professor Allen Grimshaw and IU librarian Polly Grimshaw considered both scholarly achievement and service contributions:

“It is further the intent of the Donor for the Grimshaw Professorship to recognize the accomplishments and loyalty of established members of the faculty who have demonstrated their commitment to the future of the Department and Indiana University”

As many of you know, Brea Perry completed her PhD at Indiana University in 2008 and returned here in 2014 after starting her career as an Assistant Professor at the University of Kentucky. In recommending Brea Perry, the committee of three current/former Grimshaw Professors (Eliza Pavalko, Brian Powell and Art Alderson) tasked with advising me on the next Professorship reviewed several outstanding candidates, all of whom are “excellent scholars, committed teachers and mentors, and invaluable members of the Indiana University community.”

As we celebrate Brea now, I am heartened to know that the strength of the department is reflected in the number of other deserving candidates for this prestigious award.
