About Victoria Thompson

I am a first year PhD candidate at Indiana University and I am interested in improving workplace conditions for restaurant workers and wage-workers beyond to curb the long-term negative effects of precarious work. Such work has been structured through public and private policy to inhibit security and equality for workers as they age, which often locks workers in difficult socio-economic positions. My master’s thesis used qualitative interview methods to focus on front-of-house (FOH) restaurant workers’ perceptions of workplace conditions and demands during COVID, specifically centered around their experiences of emotional labor. I hope to use my findings and conclusions to direct my dissertation research. I would like to continue to investigate how workplaces and organizations structure workers occupational and overall well-being to address the stress and difficulties of work that worsen and lead to declines in mental health, job loss, and overall precarity.
Besides my academic work, I enjoy watching documentaries or YouTube and listening to music. I am accompanied by three cats who are all about a year apart. My oldest is Beanz, her younger brother is named Bubba, and their youngest brother is Buttermilk. My favorite hobby is swimming…but a close second is playing video games with my nine-year-old sister.
