Maya earned her BPhil in International & Area Studies, Anthropology, and English Writing from the University of Pittsburgh. After graduation, she completed a Fulbright research fellowship in Japan and went on to work in refugee resettlement and as staff at the University of Pittsburgh, overseeing programming for international students. Her research interest is in South Asian (Bengali) migration to Japan, specifically pertaining to intercultural exchange with Japanese local communities through migrant rights advocacy and food spaces. She is also interested in immigrant eldercare in the US and Japan. Originally born in Bloomington and moving to Pittsburgh when she was four, Maya is now returning to her birthplace as a first-year Sociology Ph.D. student.
