Ellis Frieh is a PhD candidate in the Department of Sociology at Indiana University. They received an MA in Sociology from Indiana University in 2017 and a BA in Sociology from SUNY Buffalo's Honors College in 2015. Ellis is also a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow. Ellis is currently engaged in a multi-method dissertation research project in partnership with a peer-run nonprofit organization in Massachusetts. Specifically, their research examines the experiences of certified peer specialists, how peer-run nonprofits navigate tensions between their values and the requirements of funding agencies on which they rely, and how peer specialists and peer-run organizations can create needed change in approaches to mental health care, especially for underserved populations.
